The electronic referendum on the European Charter for Democratic Schools without violence took place between 11 and 22 October 2004. It was a great success, both in terms of the impressive participation rate (more than 16,000 votes cast) and the strong support for the adoption of the charter, as demonstrated by the fact that more than 90% of votes were in favour. The electronic referendum will also provide a very useful starting point for the promotion of the School Charter in 2005, during the European Year of Citizenship through Education.
We hope that the European Charter for Democratic Schools without Violence, which received such wide support from the pupils who participated in its preparation and the electronic referendum, will be borne in mind and applied in everyday school life and will serve as a model for democratic participation and violence prevention throughout the school community.
